Top 10 Duals For Thursday

Top 10 Duals

A couple of top 10 dual matches can be found on the Colorado Wrestling slate Thursday night as #4 Rocky Ford (2A) challenges #6 Lamar (3A) and #5 Arvada West visits #10 Valor Christian in Class 5A.

Based on pre-season rankings issued this week by Tim Yount with On the Mat, the best pairings between Rocky Ford and Lamar appear to be in weights 120, 132 and 285.

At 120 pounds, both Rocky Ford’s Dillon Jaramillo and Lamar’s Ethan Andrade are ranked third in their respective class.  Jaramillo won a state championship in 2017 and  finished sixth at 113 a year ago.  Andrade was the runner-up in Class 3A last season.

At 132, Joziah Maestas is ranked second for Rocky Ford and Zane Rankin is fifth for Lamar.  Both are sophomores and both are coming off stellar freshman campaigns as Maestas ended up fourth at 120 and Rankin picked up 35 match wins.

At 285, Lamar’s Sy Spitz sits second in the 3A rankings this week and Simon Apodaca of Rocky Ford sixth in Class 2A.  Spitz placed fourth at state a year ago as a sophomore with Apodaca closing his sophomore season at 11-12.

Two other weight classes could see top 10 pairings as #4 Jesse Tapia of Rocky Ford faces #10 Derek Miller of Lamar at 182 while Santino Mendoza of Rocky Ford and Walker Kee of Lamar could pair up at 138.  They’re ranked 8th and 9th respectively.

The Arvada West-Valor Christian dual features nine wrestlers ranked in the top 10 of their respective weights and two of them could square off.  That match is set at 182 where Valor Christian’s Jake Welch is ranked number one by On the Mat.  He could face 4th ranked Elijah Olson if both wrestlers compete.

Arvada West also features Mitch Romero and Dylan Kruse.  Romero is ranked second at 106 and Kruse fourth at 113.  Bode Marvel sits tenth at 152 for the Wildcats as well.

Welch is joined on the Valor Christian roster by #6 Robbie Shell (195), #7 Adam Church (220), #8 Jack Howell (160) and #10 John Murphy (138).
